Answer: The new OSHA Steel Erection Standard is a revision to the previous edition of 29 CFR 1926.750.

Answer: The new Steel Erection Standard became effective January 18, 2002.

Question: Who is covered by the new Steel Erection Standard? TOP

Answer: 1926.750(a) This subpart sets forth requirements to protect employees from the hazards associated with steel erection activities involved in the construction, alteration, and/or repair of single and multi-story buildings, bridges, and other structures where steel erection occurs. The requirements of this subpart apply to employers engaged in steel erection unless otherwise specified. This subpart does not cover electrical transmission towers, communication and broadcast towers, or tanks.

Answer: Controlling contractor means a prime contractor, general contractor, construction manager or any other legal entity, which has the overall responsibility for the construction of the project - its planning, quality and completion.

Answer: Yes, the new steel erection has changed the tie-off requirements for steel erectors. The complete test of 1926.750 must be reviewed to determine tie-off requirements during specific steel erection activities; i.e. connecting, bolt up and decking operations.
